You have a phone interview coming up, and you want to make sure that you pass it. But, the challenge is you know quite sure how to pass a phone interview. Well, Today, I’m going to share how you can pass this phone interview, but first, let’s talk about a mistake that you wants to avoid that will prevent you from passing the interview, and this mistake is you don’t actually understand the purpose of a phone interview. It’s understandable when you have a face to face interview it feels a little bit different, you know who you’re speaking to you kind of usually know what the interview is going to be about. You kind of know what you’re supposed to do but, with a phone interview, it’s not exactly clear what you are supposed to do in order to pass it a challenge is.
If you don’t understand the purpose of a phone interview then you will actually struggle to do the things that you need to do in order to make sure that you pass it. The reality is the purpose of a phone interview is to actually screen you and to see whether you are worth interviewing and inviting you to their office. It’s really just about are you someone that’s worth inviting in for an interview so if you actually prepare for your interview knowing that all you need to do is be interesting enough that they want to invite you for an interview. You then you’ll actually pass that interview, I’m going to share the five steps you need to take to make sure that you are someone that is interesting enough for them to invite in for an interview.

Make a good first impression
Now, the first thing you need to do is you need to make a good first impression the reason why I say this is that often when you have a phone interview, you don’t think about how you can make a first impression. When you’re doing a face-to-face interview you know that you have to wear the right outfit you have to get your hair done, you have to look good. But, when you’re doing a phone interview it’s often easy to forget that you actually need to equally make as good a first impression as the only thing they have to go by is your voice. So, the question is how do you make a good impression? Well, all it is it’s really about being conversational so, this is about being someone that is very easy to talk to on the phone.
If, they feel like they’re having to try and get blood out of a stone when talking to you because you don’t say very much. Then they aren’t unlikely to pass you on to the next round, and you also want to make sure that when you’re answering your questions you are giving them the detailed answers they are looking for. So, really be sharp be conversational be friendly, and have a rally really energetic tone in your voice. If you’re sounding board or you’re sounding tired or you’re sounding frustrated then, you won’t sound like someone that they actually want to interview.
Show you understand the role
The second thing you want to do is you want to make sure you understand the role; I have been surprised by how many people go in for interviews and haven’t really understood the role. The problem is if, you don’t understand the role or you look like you don’t understand the world you’ve been applying for the person interviewing you will think you’re not even worth inviting in for a face to face interview because you don’t even know what job you applied for. Because, the reality is that they know that a lot of people send applications to a lot of companies, and a lot of people send applications to a lot of roles, and they will only want to talk to and invite people to know that this is the company they want to work for this. Is the role they want to do, and they really understand what you will they are expecting of them.
Prepare example to show your competency
Which is using examples to show that you are competent and are technically someone that is qualified to do this position now, easy way to do this is to go back to the job description, and have a look at each section in the job description, and have a look at what types of experience they were looking for. What types of skills they are looking for, and also what kind of results they want you to help them achieve, and for each of those categories, each of those areas actually think about examples to illustrate times when you have done. Those tasks because as I said the whole point of this phone interview is to screen you. It’s you know they have a pile of resume or CV, and they’re thinking which ones are worth interviewing. They’re really just skimming through them so, the best thing to do is to make sure that you are ready for when they say tell me about a time when you’ve done this.
Make sure your answers are short and relevant
The fourth thing needs to do is you need to make sure your answer to their questions are short and relevant you know you really want to make sure that you answer the question. That they’re asking in a very concise manner the reason why I say this is because the person is interviewing you probably has to do lots and lots of phone interviews in a day. So, what they’re doing is been really just trying to get this done, and make it as to whether you’re worth inviting in for an interview or not.
Ask a question
Last, but not least is to have a question lined up often a hiring manager or HR person will ask you do you have a question, and the answer that you should not give is, “no I think, I got everything, I think I know everything knows” don’t miss this opportunity. You know one of the things I always mention in my articles when I’m working with clients is that the best way to pass an interview is to know exactly what the company is looking for us to know. What their goals are to know what their objectives are, and to know what results they want you to achieve.
So, if you can ask a question that gives you some insight something that you don’t already know, and it helps you learn something that you don’t already know. Then that means is that you will have some information that will inform answers that you in the future but, one of the questions that I love to ask is what are your key objectives for this year or what do you think makes it difficult for you to achieve the results right now. Because, when you are aware of what makes it challenging for you to do the role then, it means when you’re giving your answers in the future can actually say, I am aware that one of the challenges your business has is a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h. This is my suggestion this how I would do this or I am aware to you have these goals, and I am confident that I can help you achieve these goals.
